Production Focus talks to producers Zoe Davis and Evelyn Franks about AltArtist, a documentary project that explores the unique talents of artists around the world

The talent of artists seeking to create change through their work is not always given the recognition it deserves. However, such unique pieces of artwork are brought to the attention of a wider audience thanks to AltArtist, an ongoing series of cross-platform short documentaries. Through the series of films producers Zoe Davis and Evelyn Franks reveal the inspirations and talents of artists, many of whom are isolated by geography, disability, poverty or conflict. (more…)

Director Liz Mermin discusses the ob doc in which racehorses take centre stage
As the title implies, it is the horses that are the stars of Liz Mermin’s inventive and highly original documentary. The film follows three Irish racehorses throughout a challenging racing year, giving insights into what it is like for the equine stars and exploring the joys and pressures their jockeys and trainers face. The Pie Factory studios is celebrating its third year in production, since it was set up at the MediaCityUK base in Salford. Once a derelict pie making factory, the premises have now been transformed into a production hub complete with three sound stages, green rooms, dressing rooms and offices for media companies.
Peel Media, the company behind the MediaCityUK project at Salford Quays in Manchester, was also responsible for developing The Pie Factory TV and film sound stages back in early 2007. The facility is now seen as a key component of MediaCityUK; a development for the digital and creative industries featuring production companies, accommodation and a technical infrastructure supported by 18 million metres of fibre. Interview: Producer Howard Goldstein on King Kennedy
King Kennedy tells the stories of the lives and deaths of JFK, his brother Bobby and Martin Luther King, linking the assassinations of the three iconic characters. The documentary also stands out as it is made entirely from archive material with no narration, no talking heads and no actors and therefore relies on the powerful dialogue and soundtrack to help tell the story. Interview: Director David Bond on Erasing David

Director David Bond explores how much the government knows about us in his innovative documentary Erasing David. When Bond receives a letter from the government Child Benefit Office informing him revenue and customs data about him and his child has been lost he begins to worry about how much information the government holds about ordinary citizens. To find out what people could do with the data available about him, Bond decides to leave his life behind and ‘erase’ himself. Two top private investigators are given the task of trying to track him down in thirty days using only information that is available in the public domain. (more…)
